Taking Care of You
Written by Aakifa Shafeer
We are often so focused on pouring into other people's cups that we forget to fill our own. While it is important to give and support those around us, it is even more important to do so without burning ourselves out or negatively affecting our own well-being. In today's fast-paced world, many of us fall into a routine of eating, sleeping, working, and repeating the cycle every day. In the midst of all this, we rarely take a moment to pause and truly live. Self-care is not selfish; it is essential. Taking care of yourself can help you give more effectively, improve your overall well-being, and show up as the best version of yourself for both yourself and those around you.
So, what does self-care actually look like? Although it may vary from person to person, self-care generally falls into two key areas: caring for your body and nurturing your mind and heart.
Self-Care Starts with You
1. Maintaining an Active Lifestyle
Staying active within your own limits is an important part of self-care. This can include swimming, playing sports, working out at home, walking, or running. Even a simple walk in the park can be beneficial, not only for your physical health but also for your mental well-being.
2. Developing a Good Sleep Routine
If you have difficulty sleeping, making a few simple lifestyle changes can help. Avoiding caffeine and limiting screen time before bed, as well as avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime or allowing enough time between dinner and bedtime, may improve sleep quality. Activities such as listening to calming music, meditating, or practicing relaxation techniques can also help calm your mind and prepare your body for rest (Arvanitopoulou, 2024).
3. Spiritual Self-Care
Practicing gratitude and shifting your focus toward the positive aspects of your life can help foster a greater sense of appreciation and contentment. Engaging in activities such as meditation, prayer, or quiet reflection can also nurture peace of mind, promote inner balance, and provide comfort during difficult times (Monarch, 2024).
4. Setting Boundaries
Consciously creating a list of things you do not want to engage in can be an effective form of self-care. This may include limiting work-related tasks to working hours, avoiding screens during meals, or saying no to activities that negatively affect your well-being. Learning to set boundaries can help reduce unnecessary stress and improve your mental health.
Even on airplanes, passengers are instructed to put on their own oxygen masks before assisting others. Without first attending to your own needs, it becomes difficult to help those around you. Similarly, taking care of yourself ensures that the best version of you is available for your loved ones when they need support (Mental Health First Aid USA, 2022).
While these are some common self-care practices, the most effective approach is one that aligns with your individual needs and lifestyle.
Self-care is both a necessity and a personal journey. Finding what works best for you and incorporating it into your daily routine is important for maintaining overall well-being. Investing in your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health can improve your quality of life, help you manage responsibilities more effectively, and support personal growth. Although it may take time to discover and understand what works best for you, the benefits of prioritizing your health and well-being make the effort worthwhile (HA | Wisdom Wellbeing, 2025).
